Something to Think About

Evil and Remembering the Moore's Ford Bridge Lynchings

There will always be evil in the world. We are going through a time of change. Candidates, policies and conventional wisdom are being tested every day. It is our responsibility to be truthful and honest and not put our own wishes above what is right.

Last night, President Biden gave a poor speech that I hoped would be more. Not more hyperbolic lingo with threats to democracy at every turn. Almost as he was speaking, real threats to democracy—protesters covering their faces with the flags of terrorist groups were defacing property and tearing down our beloved flag. And 100 members of the minority party in the US House boycotted the speech of one of our strongest allies in support of that kind of nonsense.

Bringing it back home to the solemn anniversary of the Moore’s Ford Bridge lynchings in Walton and Oconee Counties, we must not let evil stand and we must call it what it is. Elected officials and campaigns are generally not evil. Mobs of people killing people at will are—whether it’s in Georgia, Israel or the concentrations camps over eastern Europe in WWII. We must know real evil when we see it and we must call it out and don’t waste our words on things that are not evil.
